3AI Expert Talk Series - Session 1
This event is brought to you by
Jorge Silva, Senior Manager - Machine Learning, SAS
Jorge Silva received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST Lisbon in 2007. He continued to be involved in academics as a senior research scientist at Duke University, where he developed novel machine learning methods for large-scale problems, e.g., unsupervised learning, analysis of high-dimensional data, recommender systems and social networks.
He has been with SAS since 2012, and is currently Senior Manager of the Machine Learning server development team. The team delivers a broad portfolio of analytical methods, including recommender systems, Bayesian optimization, neural networks and reinforcement learning. Besides developing enterprise software, he holds multiple US patents and has authored numerous research publications. Additionally, since 2018 he serves as adjunct faculty in the Computer Science department at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate Machine Learning.
Expert Talk Details
In this talk, we introduce reinforcement learning (RL) as a specialized subdomain of machine learning and artificial intelligence. RL has recently garnered notoriety for achieving superhuman performance in chess, Go, and real-time strategy games. However, RL is also applicable to numerous other domains that have more business relevance.
Examples include customer journey optimization, item recommendation, predictive maintenance, manufacturing, finance, and retail. The talk provides a brief overview of several of these applications, and a detailed explanation of a retail use case. Namely, we describe a cashier scheduling system based on computer vision and RL, which is currently in operation at the SAS cafeteria.
